Slow and Steady

Many have posed the question, “How do you eat an elephant?” The answer: one bite at a time. This is the philosophy authors Jay Watson and Kyle Witlshire have had to take as they have developed and written their debut novel The Dead Rock Stars. No shortcuts; just hard work.

On November 2, 2018, Jay and Kyle met again to continue to plan their story. They have learned that as the story unfolds new ideas take shape, plot points veer in different, unforeseen directions, and some elements fall to the wayside. This is all part of the process of crafting what they believe will be a story many will cherish for years to come.

One of the beauties, they have discovered, of having two authors creating a single story is that progress can be made because the work is halved. It is not incumbent upon just one person to spark creativity, whether they are feeling it or not. In a writing partnership, authors can lean upon each other for inspiration and ideas.

Since they began their partnership, there have been moments when Kyle has not been able to devote much thought or creativity to the project. In those moments, Jay has been there to bolster the duo. On the flip side, at times Kyle has done the same for Jay. They have discovered that working together they are stronger and better than they would be alone.

In their most recent planning session, Jay and Kyle, mapped out what they believe will be the first half of their book. They know where they want to go, but many carefully laid steps must be taken to get there successfully. Characters have to be developed. Plot points must be thought out. It’s not an overnight process. It’s like eating an elephant; one bite at a time.
